Celebrating 10 Years of the LEAP Study: How Early Peanut Introduction Changed Everything

At Crazy Richard’s, we care about more than just what’s inside your jar—we care about the health and well-being of families everywhere. That’s why we’re highlighting a milestone that transformed how we think about peanut allergies: the 10th anniversary of the groundbreaking LEAP (Learning Early About Peanut Allergy) study.

What is the LEAP Study?

In 2015, a landmark clinical trial known as the LEAP study revealed something incredible—introducing peanut-based foods to infants between 4 to 11 months of age reduced the risk of developing a peanut allergy by over 80% by age five.

This was a game-changer. For years, parents had been told to avoid peanuts during infancy. The LEAP study turned that advice upside down, showing that early introduction—especially for children at higher risk, like those with eczema or egg allergies—could actually prevent peanut allergies. The Impact 10 Years Later

A decade later, the research continues to hold strong. Follow-up studies have shown that the benefits of early peanut introduction last well into adolescence, even if kids don’t keep eating peanuts regularly. (Source: The Guardian)

The findings led to major shifts in health guidelines. In 2017, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) officially recommended early introduction of peanut foods for infants, under the guidance of healthcare professionals. (Source: NIAID Guidelines)

Why This Matters to Us

Peanuts are more than just a delicious, nutritious food, they’re part of a healthier future for families. At Crazy Richard’s, we’re proud to make clean, simple peanut butter and share important science that supports healthier eating from the start.

This anniversary is about celebrating progress: fewer allergies, more inclusion, and better understanding of food introduction in early life.

Something’s Missing: A Campaign Worth Following

This year, the National Peanut Board is celebrating the LEAP study anniversary in a powerful way through their “Something’s Missing” campaign. The campaign addresses the growing trend of removing peanuts from school and campus menus, highlighting how this approach leaves behind important nutrients without actually eliminating allergy risks.

Instead, “Something’s Missing” promotes smart, inclusive practices that protect those with allergies while keeping nutritious foods like peanuts available for all. (Explore the Campaign Here)
